Why Zanzibar Should Be The Beach Destination You Check Out

January 11, 2018 By: Themusicalmeanderesscomment

It’s winter in Canada, which means the cold weather is making anyone with the time, and the extra cash, take a really good look at cheap beach/hot weather destinations. Getting out the the cold is, (to some), as much a national pastime as hockey (whoops…did I say that out loud!?)

There are pretty much unlimited options for those wanting a break. Mexico, the Caribbean, Cuba, Central America, or even the southern US states. All can be accessed within a few hours of flight from most major Canadian cities. You can wake up in -20°C, and be enjoying a mojito pool-side by dinner.

If you’re looking to go for a bit longer, you may be considering Greece or South Pacific islands.

But have you ever considered Africa? And specifically; Zanzibar, in Tanzania?

Located on the east coast of the continent, the island of Zanzibar is a tropical paradise with year-round perfect weather, white sand beaches, unbelievably clear blue water, world class diving and snorkeling, and little towns full of history, culture, and stunning architecture. (Also; if, for whatever reason, that’s not enough for you, board a flight and within an hour or two, you can be seeing wild animals in the Serengeti…)

But let’s assume you are just looking for a beach holiday. Why consider Zanzibar?

Cost

After your flight from your home country, the cost of accommodation, food and activities is always going to come in cheaper than other tropical destinations.

There is no shortage of homey, colourful, safe, beach-access guest houses and budget hotels. These can start at as little as 20$ US per evening, and often will include breakfast.

Of course, there are more ‘Western-style accommodations’ with a Melia brand hotel that recently opened (2017). Western brands are slow to come (and this is likely a good thing, as you can step outside your hotel and know that you are in Africa. You won’t find a Rio, Four-Seasons, or Super 8, but consider where you are and embrace the experience.

Activities

As an island paradise, there is no shortage of things to do. Want to relax and read on a pristine white-sand beach? They’re only everywhere. Into an active holiday? World-class snorkelling and diving can be found just off the sandy beaches. Want to experience cultural and interesting architecture? Stone town is only an hour drive from the north of the island and offers a glimpse at how locals live on the island. A spice tour is an excellent way to spend the day, or local tours of the markets and architecture is a great way to spend a day.

Spend a day touring the market and architecture in Stonetown.

Make sure to go sailing on these traditional boats!

Accommodation

Zanzibar has every kind of accommodation you could want. Whether you’re looking for a sprawling beach-side villa to host extended family, or are seeking to get away from technology for a week in a hut without power. You can find it all in Zanzibar.

Recently (2017), the North American chain hotel Melia brand opened a hotel on the east short, and it offers an option to those seeking a western brand option.

Catch the sunrise and sunset from the beach of your hotel. The skies in Zanzibar are incredible!

It’s quiet!

Unlike other popular sun-destinations, you won’t find yourself constantly surrounded by other tourists. It’s easy to find yourself a quiet patch of beach, your own chair to watch the sunset, or a table at a restaurant without a prior reservation. Take advantage of the quiet before everyone else realizes how amazing this tiny island is!
